Rodney had always liked exploring new things. Well in his head any ways. Outside there were things that could kill him, like bees or orange trees! Rodney mostly liked to read, especially about science. He was always picking up his fathers science magazines.
When Rodney was around 7, his parents found him scribbling furiously in one of the magazines in red crayon.
“Rodney!” exclaimed his mother. He looked up at his mother. “What are you doing?”
His mother was only a nurse, she would never understand. He looked to his father. Rodney’s father was very red. Rodney thought his father was having a heart attack and started to panic. His father was not having a heart attack, but he did grab the magazine from Rodney and start yelling at him.
“What the hell do you think you are doing? I just got this magazine and hadn’t had a chance to look at it yet!”
“Dear, hush, the baby,” said Rodney’s mother as she went to go check on Jeannie, Rodney’s sister. He liked her a lot. She was cute and didn’t contradict him. Rodney watched his mother leave him to his father’s ranting.
“How could you? Didn’t we tell you to not deface anything that isn’t yours?” his father continued. Rodney listened for a little while longer, but soon got bored. His brain needed more stimulation than this.
“I wrote in it because it was wrong. I didn’t want you to read something that was wrong,” Rodney said. “You always make a big fuss, so I wanted to make your night better. I’m sorry.”
Rodney’s father just stared at his son. He then looked at the magazine and the notes Rodney made. He looked back at Rodney and sat at the table.
“Rodney, come here and show me what else is wrong.”
Rodney left his chair and climbed onto his father’s lap. He grabbed the red crayon and looked at his father. His father nodded and Rodney began talking and making more notes in the margins. Some time later his mother came down with his sister and sat at the table. She watched Rodney for awhile and then looked at her husband. He looked up at her and upon seeing her expression just sighed.
Rodney looked up at his parents. “What? What are you talking about?”
Rodney’s mother smiled. “Nothing, baby. Go back to telling us about the magazine.”
“Okay. See hear, Rundam said that ‘a black hole... blah, blah, blah.’ Nothing is right with this paragraph.” Rodney took the red crayon and crossed out the whole paragraph.
The four of them sat at the table until the very early hours of the morning. When Rodney’s father put him to bed, Rodney was still clutching the magazine. His parents went into the living room and talked. By the time Rodney woke up at 10 am, his parents had already made an appointment to see a child psychologist. Rodney was soon on the fast track to exploring new things.
